Shipston 3rds v Claverdon

12th April 2008
Chipping Norton 2nds 14 – Shipston 3rds 28

Shipston 3rds travelled to Chipping Norton looking for their 20th win of the season, having been undefeated for the last 14 games.

Chipping Norton had a large and abrasive pack, which Shipston’s pack met head on with equal determination. The opening ten minutes were very tight with Shipston largely defending, despite having the advantage of the wind and the slope.

The deadlock was broken by Shipston’s three quarters who cut lose as they have done all season for a fine score rounded off by fullback, Keith Hosken.

Chipping Norton continued to attack hard but were met by a determined and well-organised defence. The Chipping Norton centres and back row were a constant threat but some great work by Cox, Foreman, Wicks and Alexander stopped them gaining any momentum. Andy Cox, playing his last game before getting married next Saturday, picked up an early wedding present from Chipping Norton in the form of a prize winning black eye.

Shipston always looked dangerous on the break and a smartly taken quick penalty by Charlie Cox, deep in the Shipston half saw Nick Briggs break the Chipping Norton defence with a neat inside pass to the Shipston number eight, who passed to James Horton. Horton then raced half the length of the field to score one of his trademark tries.

Chipping Norton continued to pose all sorts of problems and scored two well-deserved tries early in the second half to bring them right back into the game.

A great kick off from James Horton saw replacement flanker Josh Hunter sprint deep into Chippy territory to secure the ball and flick a lovely pass to Brendon who applied his usual subtlety to score.

Josh Hunter then scored the try of the game five minutes later, which secured the win for Shipston. Gathering the ball, just outside his own twenty two right on the touchline, Hunter sprinted the length of the pitch, embarrassing several Chipping players with his pace to score under the posts.

Shipston ended a fantastic season with twenty wins. Thanks must go to all who have played this season, especially Shipston’s inspirational captain, Paul Horton, who has encouraged his side to play open, entertaining rugby all season.

Shipston 3rds 58 – Witney 4ths 17

Shipston entertained a strong and competitive Witney side at home on Saturday. In brilliant sunshine and with the slope and wind with them, Shipston put Witney under pressure from the kick off to force a lineout deep in the opposition’s half, which allowed the lively Reece Gidley to scamper over for the first of his two tries.

Shipston made the most of the dry conditions and continually ran at Witney, causing them all sorts of difficulties. Shipston welcomed back Will Howard at fly half, after injury, who controlled the game well with Shipston’s threes posing a constant threat. This was reflected in Lee Williams grabbing a try on one wing and Muddy Waters getting a brace on the other wing.

Shipston Thirds are considering introducing random drugs testing for its players after veteran prop, Mark Ashworth, found himself in open space on the half way line with no option but to outpace the Witney defence and score a fantastic individual try. Unfortunately this piece of brilliance was then eclipsed, by Mr Ashworth who demonstrated why props should never kick in broken play. Play continued once the laughter had died down. *

Witney were disrupted by a couple of injuries to their side but continued to make this a difficult and entertaining game. The Witney defence found James Horton a real handful with his direct running and he was rewarded with two fine tries.

Chris Forman, who seemed to be supporting everywhere, captained Shipston and added two tries himself to the scoreboard.

This was a great team result with Shipston playing some nice controlled rugby. Shipston Thirds will be looking for their 20th win of the season on Saturday.

Tim Brendon

* The prop in question would like to point out that the try was AFTER the kick, by way of penance for his foolish behaviour.

Birmingham Civil Service 2nds  0pts  Shipston on Stour 3rds 14pts

Shipston 3rds travelled to Birmingham on Saturday to find themselves ranged against a Birmingham Civil Service team that was augmented by several members of Redditch seconds.  Undaunted by this the Rams using the elements in their favour camped on the home sides try line but uncharacteristically failed to score with finishing errors that prevented that all important first try.  With a half time score at 0-0 and the wind advantage now with the home side the 3rds knew that they had “game on”.  The side as they have done all season responded to the challenge magnificently with William Howard making inroads on the wing and ably supported by James Horton the opening score came soon after the restart.

The rest of the game found Shipston heroically defending their line after wave after wave of attacks broke against the Rams defence.  The heroes of the day were all who played, but special mention has to be made of the front row of Sean Willoughby, Mike Watkins and Rees Gidley who all had magnificent games in the tight stealing valuable ball against a much larger but less mobile opposition.

The Rams tied up the game late in the second half when after a typical 15 man move new boy Mike Hallam finished off with a try under the posts sealing a 14-0 win.  The Shipston 3rds march on.

Saturday 23rd February
Shipston 3rds 17pts   Rugby AEI  3pts

Shipston 3rds welcomed Rugby AEI to Mayo Road on Saturday for what proved to be a competitive fixture.  The Shipston skipper urged the side to start well, and that they did through thunderous runs from the forwards with Brendon to the fore as usual, ably assisted by the old back row duo of Forman and Hunter.  The game progressed with Shipston attacking out wide when ever the opportunity presented itself.  But it was down to the the superb smuggling techniques of Mark Ashworth making a welcome return that gave Shipston the first score.  Rugby replied with a penalty that kept them in the hunt and the midfield of Hoskin, Horton and Horton had to work overtime to keep out the threat posed by the visiting back line.  The first half ended with a score and conversion from James Horton who posed a threat to the opposition with his direct running throughout the game.

The second half saw Shipston continue where they left off and the indomitable spirit of the team came to the fore, there was an excellent group performance from a gaggle of Hunters playing together for the first time this season, their reward was for Josh to scamper over in the last move of the game for a well deserved try in what is proving to be an exceptional season of great rugby and camaraderie.

Brackley 3rds 12pts - Shipston on Stour 3rds 20pts

Shipston 3rds travelled to Brackley on Saturday hoping to avenge earlier defeats in the year inflicted by a useful third team that had been beaten only once this season.  The game started disastrously for Shipston with a mistake in defence leading to a converted try by Brackley, however the Rams regrouped and as has been their style this season they attacked through the forwards and out wide and this led to a well taken try by Lee Williams after a precision chip by André Pringle.  The Rams kept attacking throughout the first half and were rewarded with a try from the side-stepping genius of "Baggy Shorts" Hoskin and they closed out the half 10-7 ahead.

The second half saw a different pattern to the game with the introduction of the Fijian element by Brackley at scrum half to link with his powerful compatriot at No 8.  The back row of the Rams worked overtime to contain this new threat, but a score was inevitable and Brackley took a 12-10 lead.  the conversion was missed and Shipston hurled themselves down the field and earned a penalty that the Shipston skipper gave to the younger Horton to convert. With the score at 13-12 in the Rams favour, Brackley spent the next 20 minutes camped on the Shipston Line.  Heroic defence by the team throughout kept them at bay and the turning point of the game came when William Howard cleared the line with a 75 yard kick that the Shipston forwards capitalised on with a fiery and determined try from Rees Gidley and with a successful conversion the Rams ran out 20-12 winners.  Full credit goes to Brackley who were sporting opposition throughout and ref Nigel who "hobbled" on despite an injury as he controlled the game immaculately.

Sat 2nd Feb
Upton on Severn 2nds   8pts   Shipston on Stour 3rds  34pts

Shipston 3rds travelled to Upton on Saturday full of confidence having been unbeaten in their last 5 games.  The side was ably assisted by 4 volunteers from the 2nd XV who all played with great commitment and slotted into the 3rd team ethos extremely well.  The home side started off with an early penalty and looked dangerous at half back and centre, but the Rams responded as they have done all season by stretching the opposition and attacking on the wide outside, this lead to a score from William Howard who had an excellent match on the wing and followed up with a try from the irrepressible Tim Brendon who had a storming game at number 8.  The match was effectively won just before half time when The Rams scored 2 tries in quick succession, William Howard scooting over to add a second try, and the try of the match by James Horton following excellent work by the 2nd XV imports.  Further changes by the opposition at half time saw them pressing the Shipston line but once again the forwards took control and great interplay by the team saw Howard go over for his third try and Brendon for his second.  Charlie Cox deserves mention for a terrier like performance at scrum half as the 3rds march on.

26th January
Shipston 3rd XV 66pts Spartans 4th XV 5pts

Saturdays game at Mayo Road saw the Rams 3rds lined up against their nemesis from last season the Spartans who soundly beat them last time the two teams met.  Consequently the 3rds were very much in the right frame of mind for this revenge fixture.  With shades of “Thermopalaye” and annihilation ringing in their ears The Shipston forwards set about their task.  Unfortunately this did not go to plan when despite applying early pressure the visitors took the lead with a break away try when the opposition centre ran the length of the field for the first score.  The team regrouped and after that small phyrric victory the pack tore into their opposition and created the platform that enabled the Rams to play their brand of 15 man rugby that has been so successful this season.

Scores soon came from all quarters as The Spartans capitulated and Shipston ran up their largest victory margin of the season.  Scores came from Lee Williams, Will Howard, James Horton, Chris Forman, Andy Cox and Nick Briggs with James Horton having a successful day with the boot by adding 8 conversions.  A great performance and the Thirds look forward to next weeks fixture with much anticipation.  Our thanks to referee John Cowper who stepped in at the last minute and handled the game with an even hand.

19th January
Dudley Kingswinford 5th  10pts - Shipston on Stour 3rd XV 35pts

Finding a ground that wasn’t under water was the first order of the day for the Rams 3rd XV consequently a day out to Dudley was required where despite the rain the pitches were in excellent condition.  The 3rds tucked into the opposition with great purpose notching up an 8 point lead after a penalty by James Horton and an opening try from William Howard – great credit must go to Ed Parker who was standing in at hooker, who had an excellent game throughout as he set up that first try when he set off on a mazy run towards the try line.  Further scores came from Wixey as he gathered a speculative kick from the boot of James Horton and a try from Keith Hoskins.  At this stage The Rams were playing their open 15 man rugby and carving holes in the opposition defence at will – however just before half time the opposition found new belief in themselves and scored twice to reduce the deficit to 10pts.  The rallying call was sounded and after magnificent cohesive forward play from the Shipston pack scores resulted for the impressive Tim Brendon, who on his return from injury had a huge influence on the outcome of the game as he crashed over from 20 yards out.  After further destructive tackling from the Shipston back line scores were added by Gary Flowers also making a welcome debut for the 3rd XV this season and Sean “impervious to pain” Willoughby who gratefully accepted the scoring pass in the last move of the game to make Shipston’s points total 35.  An excellent scalp for the 3rd XV who go from strength to strength in their team ethos of 15 man rugby played with great skill and enjoyment.

5th January 2008
Shipston 3rd XV 27pts  Worcester Wanderers 3rd XV 20 pts

Shipston 3rds welcomed Worcester 3rds to Mayo road on Saturday and also welcomed back veteran players Mark Ashworth, Sean Willoughby and also skipper Paul Horton to the fold after injuries.  It soon became apparent that their experience was going to be needed when the Worcester side took an early lead through their very capable forwards.  Shipston’s reply was immediate and skilful use of the chip kick proved to be the visitors undoing with a well taken try by colt stand in Ryan who chased the ball over the line.  Not to be outdone Andy Cox also saw this as the best way to get behind the defence and used the same ploy to keep the Worcester pack at bay.
Throughout the game the hard part was to get past the visitors strong defence and William Howard proved extremely adept at breaking the gain line and causing problems for the visitors.  Tries by André Pringle and Lee Williams gave the rams a 17-8 half time lead out the second half proved to be a close affair with Shipston scoring twice and the visitors matching them.  The game was sealed by excellent play from one of the youngest players on the pitch Ryan who having scored a try at one end of the pitch prevented the Worcester flying winger scoring in the opposite corner and The Rams closed out the match on top.  An excellent game played with great spirit by opposition who will always be welcome to Mayo Road

Shipston 3rds 38pts Southam 3rds 17pts

Shipston 3rds welcomed Southam 3rds to Mayo road on Saturday but soon got a rude awakening when the muscular and very competent Southam forwards scored the opening try.  Shipston realised that it was going to be a battle up front so concentration on the areas that they were superior in was the theme.  Any 50: 50 ball was Shipston’s and with Andy Cox demonstrating great physical durability Shipston started to gain the ascendancy in the all important points for column.  The Shipston backs constantly broke the gain line with Briggs and Horton to the fore and were rewarded with a well taken try by the ever improving Lee Williams.

As the game wore on debutant referee Mark Ashworth was stretched from one end of the pitch to the other as the Shipston backs kept up the pressure with superb tries from André Pringle and Nick Briggs.  To their credit Southam attacked through their forwards and scored tries, but never enough to catch up.   As the game wore on the Rams gaining useful set piece ball through the willing Nick Holdsworth the home side scored the try of the game with Chris Forman finishing off a multi handling move under the posts, an excellent and fully deserved victory.

Saturday 10th November
Chipping Norton 2nds 27pts  Shipston on Stour 0pts

Shipston 3rds picked up this fixture at the last minute on Saturday after Southam 3rds pulled out and never a side to not accept a challenge The Rams charged over to Chipping Norton to play against a very accomplished side that has been scoring a lot of points this season.  The game couldn’t have got off to a worse start when Thomas Goldwater broke his collar bone defending the Shipston Line – with no substitutes available and a stand in back row Shipston knew they were up against the odds as the home side scored 15 points in the first half with judicious use of a strong wind.

In typical 3rds style attack with the ball in hand was the only form of defence and as the home side were surprised by the quality of the Shipston play.  They were even more surprised as the game wore on by the strength and quality of the forwards ably led in the pack by the marauding Mark Ashworth and his front row of heroes of Mike Watkins and the “Old Scab” Clive to the fore.  Continually the Chipping Norton side were under enormous pressure even when The Rams were reduced to 13 men as Sean Willoughby was asked to take a short breather by the excellent referee Callum.  The pattern of the game continued with Shipston’s indefatigable spirit coming to the fore and despite further scores by Chippy in the second half Shipston 3rds departed the field with heads held high and the respect of the opposition.  Clive led the community singing in the bar afterwards as Shipston outplayed and outlasted their opponents in the after game activities which somehow left the 3rds feeling that, although they had lost the game by 27 points, they had actually won it!

Pershore 3rds  31pts  Shipston on Stour 3rds 23pts

In a lively encounter against a strong and well organised opposition, Shispton 3rds were slow to get into the game over at Wyre Piddle as the home side attacked from the start and raced into a 12 point lead.  To their credit the Shipston side throughout this encounter never lost heart and found that attack was their best method to get back into the game.  The fowrads began to supply sufficient possession to unleash the backs that put on a display of attacking rugby that even had the respect of the opposition.

Man of the match Will Howard constantly made valuable ground in the centre and the wings attacked with great success particularly Richard Wixey who scored from a chip and chase in the corner.  In the second half the muscular play of Pershore threatened to dominate as their number 6 scored two tries that galvanised the efforts of the Shipston team and culmintaed in a try from the industrious Nick Briggs after some memorable handling from the backs.  A further excellent score from Richard Wixey kept the Rams in the hunt and with one point in the game and a minute to go Shipston threatened to snatch the victory but Pershore pounced on  a mistake to emerge winners with a try under the posts that ended the game.  Shpiston are already looking fowrd to the return encounter at Mayo road in March and credit must go to the hosts Pershore for providing such a keen and sportsmanlike contest.

Shipston 3rds 57pts  Evesham 3rds 19pts

Shipston 3rds entertained Evesham 3rds at Mayo Road on Saturday and soon warmed to their task with a try from Tim Brendon. Assisted this week by a gaggle of colts that were suddenly available the old hands were able to impart some of their experience whilst taking a bit of a breather.  The pattern of the game was of a loose style perhaps from the influence of the ebullient colts on show where Ryan and John shone in the back row.

Tries came a plenty with contributions from Horton, Briggs and Hoskin and six conversions from Micky Pyne, but the best moments of the match came in  the second half with a passage of play that had Shipston defending their line frantically. After some front row “dark arts” by Mark Ashworth the ball arrived in  flanker Ryan’s hands behind his own try line and off he set.  After a mazy length-of-the-pitch run ended with a score under the posts as Ashworth watched from the other end. Evesham, shattered by their efforts to catch up with him the game was well and truly won!  This moment though was perhaps eclipsed by a surging run from the Hon Sec of the club, prop Mark Ashworth who showed great fleet of foot in fielding a short kick-off and speeding down the wing for a 50 yard dash and a score in the corner.  Evesham to their immense credit fought to the last but it was a very satisfying complete, if loose, performance from Shipston that won the day.

An interesting afternoon was going to be had when Shipston arrived at Mayo Road two find two teams already at the club house eager to have a game.  Consequently a mini tournament was agreed and organised that involved each side playing 2 games.  In their first game Shipston tore into Brackley and rocked the visitors back on their heels with some fine forward play that deserved reward but sadly the kicking boots were not on and half time emerged at 0-0.  The second half started badly for the Rams when the kick off was not fielded and that mistake allowed Brackley their only foray into the Shipston half to make the only score of the game. Shipston pressed till the final whistle and tackled and fought magnificently but to no avail as Brackley emerged the luckier winners.

Almost as if by way of revenge in their second game The Rams took their frustration in not winning out on the unfortunate Long Buckby 2nds with a  22 – 0 victory.   A deserved team try resulting in Lee Williams’ first try for the club followed by a hat trick of tries from the marauding Rees Gidley and Shipston finished the afternoon on a high as they were rewarded with a fine victory. The pack played with real ferocity with all playing a part but special note must be made of the ever improving Pete Adams and Muddy Waters whose contribution was excellent throughout.

Birmingham exiles 2nd XV 7 pts    Shipston on Stour 3rd XV 10pts

Shipston 3rds travelled to Birmingham Exiles on Saturday for an early kick off that would allow full view of the England game in the afternoon.  The effort was well worth it as Shipston tucked into the opposition England style to start with and an early score was achieved when Tim Brendon proved to be unstoppable from 5 metres as he crashed over with several Exiles hanging onto him.  However if Shipston thought they were in for an easy afternoon they were given a rude awakening as the younger opposition warmed to their task and proved worthy opposition.  A further try was scored just before half time when eschewing the option of a kickable penalty Shipston rallied their forwards and once again a close quarter try was scored by Rees Gidley making a welcome return from injury.  In a shortened second half the opposition scored a well taken try by their elusive winger that gave a few moments of discomfort to Shipston but they successfully closed out the match to win by 3 points.  Special mention should be made of Lee Williams learning his trade on the wing for an excellent run in the first half when he pinned his ears back and went for the outside, and our Canadian compatriot Clayton for a try saving tackle at full back – well done to these youngsters!

Brackley 2nd XV  33pts  Shipston on Stour 3rd XV 10pts

Shipston 3rds travelled to Brackley for their first game of the season after Brackley stepped in at the last moment to provide last minute opposition for an eager 3rd XV to test themselves.  With not only a youthful side facing them but also a youthful referee Shipston soon realised that they were going to provide a threat through use of their forward power which proved to be dominant all afternoon.  With heroic tackling throughout the first half Shipston took an early lead through a William Howard penalty.  The home side then camped on the Shipston line and eventually scored after a protracted first half that got even longer when the referee seemingly lost track of time.  The game continued in much the same vein with some huge hits coming in from a rejuvenated Tim Brendon and despite his headache driving runs from Andy Cox.  However the game turned when Shipston allowed a soft try to be scored whilst having a clarification point with the referee in the middle of the pitch. Shortly after Shipston lost their Skipper Paul Horton when there was a thunderous clash of heads that left the centre with a rapidly closing eye and an enormous egg lump on the side of his head.  Shipston continued to play with enormous heart and were rewarded when the evergreen Chris Forman who had an outstanding match at openside flanker touched down with William Howard converting.  Despite the loss Shipston played with great heart against younger and fitter opposition and are looking forward to hosting an excellent team back at Mayo Road.

Chepstow Vets. 27 pts. Shipston III's 19 pts.

For the final game of the season Shipston travelled across the Severn to sample life in the market town of Chepstow. The ground, as everywhere ,was hard, the weather hot ,and the Welsh side's pack big and powerful. With only one recognised jumper in the line out and with the Shipston scrum outgunned in the tight it was obvious from the outset that Shipston were going to have to survive on scraps of possession. With the strong Severn wind at their backs the home side used this to good effect, and, apart from from over-enthusiastic kicking through kept the visitors on the back foot. Some last ditch tackling from Chris Forman, Darryl Hunter, Father and Son Hortons and some heroic holding up to prevent grounding the ball from Tim Brendon kept the home side out for fully half an hour. The incredible thing was that once Chepstow had scored Shipston then started to really play some superb handling open rugby on the counter attack. Great interplay between No.8 Brendon, Andy Cox, winger John Alexander saw fly half Keith Hoskin burst clear to go under the posts. An interception try from the home side's outstanding young centre restored the home team advantage by half time.
With the wind at their backs Shipston had a real go at the start of the 2nd half and were in with a real chance of tying up the scores again when an attack broke down allowing the same home centre to run the length of the field to really end the game as a really competitive contest. Further scores led to the home side feeling comfortable before Shipston stung them in the last ten minutes with tries from the free running James Horton and Ian Bolger, glad to return after major knee surgery over a year ago. Two conversions from James Horton gave the score respectability. Outgoing captain, Clive Brooks ,would like to thank all the Shipston players who have helped make the last two seasons such a rewarding, sporting and social experience.

Old Leamingtonians III's 38 pts. Shipston III's 10 pts.

 April14th
The Easter lay off and the blisteringly hot weather had not put Shipston in the right frame of mind to take on a very strong and experienced Old Leams side on their own turf. With only 11 players at 9am the visitors were indeed quite relieved that the 'call to arms ' managed to see a full team assembled by the time the match kicked off.
Old Leams were organised, very keen, technically competent and were also given too much space by Shipston who were, by their own standards, lacklustre. Shipston did score two fine tries, one in each half from the impressive James Horton, following a flowing move through the back line and an exceptional counter attacking try, initiated by Pete Adams, who kept his composure when brought to ground by a fine 'last ditch tackle' to offload to the hard working Charlie Cox who gleefully dived over. Although this was one of Shipston's heaviest defeats this season there were some notable individual performances, some of dogged courage (Paul Horton..ill,Clive Brooks..groin strain,Tim Skeith...badly cut fingers/losing teeth, Matt Hammond..pulled thigh.. all kept going) some of true quality(Sean Willoughby, Charlie Cox, James Horton, Pete Adams..who 'arrived'as a rugby player this day). The stalwarts of Andy Cox, Daryl Hunter and Tim Brendon in the back row did their best to contain the home side but the squad had to be content with 'brotherhood' as feedback from their afternoon's efforts. Without that perhaps the match would not have happened?

Claverdon A XV 12pts Shipston 3rd XV 5pts

Shipston 3rds travelled to Ossetts Hole on Saturday and took part in an excellent encounter against a mixed 1st & 2nd XV team from Claverdon. The game started with Claverdon on the attack for much of the first half but as the game wore on Shipston had a belief that they could steal the match as they competed in every facet of play. Strong tackling from both teams was a feature some of which was adjudged to be too over vigorous by veteran centre Paul Horton and penalties were conceded. However the scores remained locked at 0-0 till the stroke of half time when Claverdon scored to take a 7 -0 lead. With Andy Cox slaloming his way into the team at half time, the belief still surged through that a win could be achieved.  Shipston used the conditions through shrewd tactical kicking from Keith Hoskin to pin the home side down in their half and the attacks continued. Unfortunately Claverdon luckily took advantage of a missed knock on and scored a break away try to lead 12-0. Shipston still took the game to the opposition and were unlucky not to be given a try from an unusually alert Paul Horton who pounced on a mistake by the Claverdon defence only to mistakenly have the try disallowed, fortunately for Shipston new boy Ollie drove over the line from the scrum to open their account. The rest of the game continued in the same vein with Shipston going close through James Horton but Claverdon held firm and a thoroughly competitive game was finished in Claverdon’s favour. Special mention should be made of the referee who controlled the game excellently despite decisions not going Shipston’s way at key moments there was no complaint only praise for the way the game was handled

KING'S NORTON III'S 18 pts. SHIPSTON III'S 19 pts.

Rees 'Pharoah' Gidley was the hero for the visitors in South West Birmingham as he stormed through numerous ineffective tackles to steal this match for Shipston. It had looked a lost match with 3 minutes remaining and with Shipston not threatening a score throughout the second half. Earlier on, with the wind, Shipston were coasting along. Plenty of possession had led to Gary Flowers and Keith 'Rebus' Hoskin crossing the line and a number of near things when the final pass had gone astray. Liam Flowers was entering the line from fullback and causing all sorts of panic in the home defence. With the imposing figure of Tim Brendon in the centre punching holes everything was in control, despite a certain lack of fluidity. An 'out of the blue' try from the veteran home winger gave King's Norton hope and put a completely different complexion on the game by half time. Brooks and Ball left the game at half time with leg injuries with Pete Adams and Ed Parker coming on to the wings. The vastly experienced Mark Ashworth moved to No. 8 to try to steady things and tighten up the possession.
King's Norton ,with some sound tactical kicking using the wind, created good field position and utterly dominated territory. Stout defending from Parker, Brendon, Willoughby, Cox, Gidley et.al made K.N. work for their points but two tries and a penalty had them 18-14 ahead and heading for victory until ..cometh the hour, cometh the Pharoah...

YARDLEY & DISTRICT III'S 7 pts. SHIPSTON III'S 31 pts.

For the first time for many seasons Shipston travelled to the Stechford area of North East Birmingham to take on Yardley on a busy presidents' day for the home club. Shipston’s late arrival meant that the match did not kick off until nigh on 3 o'clock with the home side well warmed up and raring to go. For twenty minutes Shipston were stuck (almost literally) in their 22 metre area, against the wind and in the heaviest area of the pitch. The mixture of colts and more experienced players who made up the home side really should have capitalised during this time but basic defensive organisation kept them out.
Once Shipston had weathered the early storm and started to string passes and continuity together then the match took on a new turn with Yardley struggling to contain a variety of attacks. After three scoring passes were judged to have been marginally forward winger Liam Flowers made the breakthrough with a corner flagging try. Forward pressure then yielded a penalty (Mick Pyne) and a further score from No. 8 Tim Brendon and Shipston were well in control at the break. During the second period Keith Hoskin showed his quality and experience by hitting space at pace from fullback to score twice and only exceptional tackling kept Flowers from further scores. The only blemish on Shipston’s day came as a result of a drop in concentration and in organisation skills with the game already tied up.
Fly half Gary Flowers had just been involved in supporting his son (tackled wide out) ,had been thumped by at least two tacklers simultaneously and was not really in a position to take up his normal role in midfield as 'Ist receiver' of a superbly thrown line out to Chris Forman at the back. Gary probably didn't see the pass which he called for and the home centre Andy Bissell accepted the gift to race away unopposed from the half way line.
An injury 'below decks' then forced centre James Horton off the field with Dan Hemmings coming on. Clive Brooks was finding it increasingly tiring to lift his size 12 boots (plus mud)off the surface so gave way to Ian Petty (smaller feet , much younger and faster)so that he could experience the delights of 2nd row play!
The Shipston front row of Mike Watkins, Adrian Ball and Roland Eliff stayed strong throughout and there was the usual scavenging work for possession from wing forward, Andy Cox. Pyne kicked with his accustomed metronomic efficiency.
The spread of food in the clubhouse on this President’s Day was superb with roast pork, turkey, chicken, range of salads etc. and Shipston 3rds would be delighted to return to the same venue to coincide with the next Yardley President’s Day and they would bring some 'doggie bags' with them, or maybe bring the families as 'supporters'.

SHIPSTON III's 17 pts. AEI RUGBY 5 pts.
 Muddy Third Teamers
After strong lobbying of the club chairman, sterling last minute work with the pitch marker machine from fullback Ian Petty, this long awaited game with AEI could proceed. With a fairly waterlogged surface there was much entertainment as many players were able to practise their 'diving on the loose ball' skills (some even perfected it )and long sequences of passes were decidedly at a premium.Shipston did dominate the first half territorially but took an age to break down the stubborn AEI defence. Wingers Dan Hemmings and Liam 'Dominici' Flowers were always a threat but could not run in due to the boggy conditions, which always favoured the covering defence. The breakthrough came from an unlikely source with the ever alert Andy Cox scavenging a poorly controlled ruck ball from AEI and popping a short pass to the lumbering Clive Brooks who merely had to go low to drive the last tackler over with him to score. Keith Hoskin then benefited from an 'unseen knock on' to score a richly deserved try. Changes were made to the home side with 'Taff ' Rhodes being replaced at hooker with Jim 'Cupboard Love' Adcock, Richard Holmes coming into the 2nd Row and Jack Glover replacing the injured Hemmings. Within minutes, Dominici Flowers had found a strip of dry ground to outflank the defence to put Shipston firmly in control. AEI did rally strongly though and, after a period of stalwart defending with all keeping good discipline in the tackle area ,the home line was breached wide out. Will Brundle worked hard among the forwards for Shipston with the wily rugby brain of vet scrum half John Alexander, keeping his forwards going hunting with a series of fine 'box kicks'. It was not the finest day for AEI to wear their splendid new red kit for the first time.

CLAVERDON II'S 7 pts. SHIPSTON III's 14 pts.

With a number of regular players absent for Shipston this game had to be played under the 'passive scrums ' regime. This probably hindered the home side who clearly possessed the more powerful scrum. During the first period Shipston used the ball well with the three-quarter line handling fluidly (Nick Briggs at centre having a particularly fine match, despite a nasty head cut) and wingers Josh Hunter and 'new kid on the block' Dave Greenwell seeing plenty of ball . It was Greenwell who scored Shipston's only try midway through the first period. Evergreen points accumulator Mick Pyne stroked three penalties over to give Shipston a comfortable lead at the break. The second half was then one way traffic towards the Shipston line as Claverdon dominated up front with their powerful forwards .Magnificent back row defence from Father and Son' Hunter' combination plus sterling work from the consistent Andy Hunt and Chris Forman kept the home side at bay until almost the final whistle. Thanks must go to the referee who managed the game really well and to the Claverdon doctor for his 'out of hours' surgery in stitching up Nick Briggs so that his family didn't have their whole evening out messed up through this strange but compelling sport !

CHIPPING NORTON III'S 26 pts. SHIPSTON III'S 21 pts.

Despite a hat-trick of tries from veteran winger Nick Briggs, with conversions from complementary winger, Mick Pyne, Shipston somehow contrived to lose this enjoyable game with their local rivals from Oxfordshire. Long periods of Shipston domination were not converted into points on the board and the home side's mixture of old heads and sixth form independent school boys were quick to counter attack and exploit ragged defensive alignment. Shipston won plenty of ball but didn't control it well enough at the back of rucks and mauls giving scrum half ,Charlie Cox, a difficult afternoon throughout. Shipston lines out are improving at this level with youngsters Sam Palmer and Adrian Ball beginning to grow in confidence but it is the next phases that need addressing. An ankle injury did restrict No. 8 Tim Brendon to a walking passenger after about 10 minutes so that may well explain some of the problems, but the game was still there to be won. Keith Hoskin again had a fine match at full back with back row stalwarts Darryl Hunter and Andy Cox (very unlucky to knock on in the act of 'scoring’ late on) getting through an immense amount of' 'undercover 'work as usual.

Shottery 28pts Shipston 3rd XV 3pts

In extremely difficult conditions a well organised and youthful Shottery side overcame the older heads of Shipston 3rds. The score line suggests an easy victory but that was far from the way the game was played. Shipston territorially had more of the game in both halves and continued attacking right to the final whistle. Indeed some of the most impressive tackling was seen by the back row stalwarts Badger Brendan and and Andy Cox who on occasions put in some fierce hits - but therein lies the difference between the two sides Shipston attacked and tackled in ones and twos and Shottery to their credit did that and more, always in numbers, and were therefore able to exploit the opportunities when they arose scoring three tries in the first half and one in the second, all converted - with Shipston only showing a penalty by James Horton in reply. As the game wore on Shipston continually competed as if they could win the game but struggled with the conditions and interpretation of the rules at critical times - in the finish with both sides resembling versions of Fran Cotton in a mud bespattered Lions game many years ago, the game finished with Shottery deserved winners but in the knowledge that they had had a competitive afternoons sport.

SHIPSTON III'S 17 pts. OLD YARDLEYIANS II'S 17 pts.

A strengthened Shipston side entertained a mixed team of Yardleians on a gluepot of a pitch to produce an enthralling encounter at Mayo Rd. John Joy and Phil Titmus, both back home from college studies in the North, formed an unlikely second row 'engine room' in front of the experienced break away trio of Tim Brendon, Andy Cox and Andy Powell. The conditions guaranteed that both back rows were to be in the thick of the action throughout.
Yardleians started the better with well rehearsed line out moves and some training ground breaks from the base of the scrum, and ,despite stalwart defence, eventually the home defence was breached wide out.
John Joy, keen to impress new colleagues, led up front with some charging runs and one of these into the heart of the visitor's defence led to Powell, Cox and Brendon setting up a close range score from Titmus to tie the scores. Shipston’s best spell of the match followed with the forwards dominant in the loose and Yardleians hanging on as veterans Paul Horton and Keith Hoskin raided through midfield ,just lacking close support at the vital time. One such attack did lead to both Andy Cox and Powell charging down desperate clearance attempts for fly half Gary Flowers to dive over on a loose ball. Mick Pyne converted coolly and it looked like Shipston were on their way to a victory. Against the run of play a well worked move on the half way line saw Yardleians break the cover again to score under the posts. An easy conversion tied up the scores once more. An intelligent switch of tactics from the visitors saw them largely dominate the second period through the forward driving mauls and series of scrums which sapped the strength from the Shipston forwards .A powerful individual try from James Horton did grab a vital lead but Shipston, with a disintegrating scrum were clearly hanging on, Sean Willoughby tackling himself to exhaustion from loose head prop, with individual bursts from Pete Buchanan, Chris Ransome and the Hortons gaining some territory. It was no surprise when a well worked move from the base of the scrum led to 'guest player' for the visitors, John Buchanan, breaking through to tie the scores. As the clock ran down referee Rob Hawkins prudently drew the match to an honourable drawing finish with play stuck in the trenches of midfield, thus saving the pitch further punishment!

SHIPSTON III'S 10 pts. EVESHAM III'S 5 pts.

Amid much confusion owing to mixed fixture messages getting through to the home side, the swamp-like pitches at Shipston eventually sustained a match between the two club's 3rd strings. Evesham waited in the changing rooms wondering if Shipston could muster some players at very late notice. The rallying call went out and players left partners in High Streets, families in restaurants, decorating trees, to muster at Mayo Rd. 12 made it by 3.00 o'clock with Evesham replacements helping out to even up the teams.
The first half was tight, riddled with errors with the conditions slowing everything down to a crawl, and players struggling to keep their footing. Tim Brendon, the home side's number 8, featured strongly, making a powerful run to the line, which was finished off by Sam Hunter scoring his first Shipston try. Brendon followed this by almost obliterating his own fly half, Gary Flowers in a bear hug tackle which took out both the Evesham centre and his own player.
In the 2nd period Evesham kept the ball tight and drove effective rolling mauls deep into the Shipston territory, retaining possession for long periods. The incessant pressure was resisted splendidly by the home side. Tackles from Paul Horton, Andy Cox, Daryl Hunter and James Horton saved the day until the superb Evesham scrum half amazingly strode over the line unopposed following a scrum on the 22. With 5 minutes to go his conversion attempt could have won the game for the visitors but when the kick faded in front of the posts it seemed to inject new hope into the home side. Charlie Cox at scrum half frantically ran everything in a do or die effort and with two minutes left 'guest full back' Jason Hodges hit the line at pace on the wing and weaved past a desperate tackle attempt by his brother James to score a fine winning try in the corner.

KING'S NORTON III'S 0 pts. SHIPSTON III'S 58 pts.

Although it took 15 minutes or so for Shipston to rediscover last week's fluency, there was never really any doubt as to the outcome. King's Norton, led outstandingly by veteran forward and captain, Tony Cotton, battled hard with their mixture of vets and untried youngsters but were always outgunned by the superior technique of the Rams' side. Every time Shipston gained possession something creative was happening and the ball was being passed in open and tight situations to players in space. This week winger Nick Briggs finished off moves with an incredible five tries but the real stars of the team were the forwards Darryl Hunter, Chris Forman and Rees Gidley. Hunter had one of those 'unexplained purple patches' of play when the ball seemed to be magnetically attracted into his hands for an hour and he was involved in most of the scores, even dummying his way through the defence a couple of times. His try was richly deserved. The moment of individual skill belonged to Rees Gidley who, while falling on a loose ball on his own 22, managed to get on knees and flick the ball away to centre Horton with a perfect pass (leading to counter attacking score) before being engulfed with a sea of King's Norton players, taking them all out of the game, thus creating the gap. Other scorers were; Tries: James Horton(2), Will Howard and Keith Hoskins. Gary Flowers gleefully floated over 4 conversions.

2nd December
SHIPSTON 'D' 57 pts. CLAVERDON II'S 5 pts.

With a lake in the corner of the pitch to avoid for all non swimmers, there was plenty of incentive to keep the ball in the hand. Shipston, having not played for two weeks, were raring to go and from the outset strung passes together along their back line to completely stun the visitors. Chris 'Moorhen' Forman, Chris Ransome and Gary Flowers had all crossed for a try with Claverdon barely having touched the ball with all scores the result of outflanking the visitors defence.
Claverdon's big forwards forced their way back into the game with Shipston conceding possession in contact as they lost track of the game plan. A solid ten minutes was spent in the Shipston 22 with only tremendous last ditch tackling holding up the visitors time and time again.
Veteran forward and Club Secretary, Mark Ashworth and young colts player Josh Hawkins, held up players much larger than themselves, with captain Clive Brooks sometimes falling over to get in the way of attacks!
With the Claverdon onslaught repelled Shipston returned to plan one and the ball once again started streaming along the line with the midfield maestro Paul' Silver Back' Horton pulling the strings in midfield. Sprightly fullback Keith Hoskins' timely incursions into the line cut through the centre of the Claverdon line and James Horton was able to put winger Nick Briggs in the clear to run in. Shipston kept with the open handling policy wherever they were on the pitch and this provided great entertainment but was always going to give Claverdon chances from a breakdown. Claverdon finally scored as one more attempted counter attack from deep floundered with a Shipston communication mix up! Briggs ended the day with 4 tries and a couple of 'assists', with Rees Gidley and Adrian Ball (his first for the the club) getting the others. Flowers chipped over 6 conversions. The match was played in great spirit and was refereed magnificently by Warwick Society ref. Mark Shales, who gave all the players every opportunity to enjoy the game as it should be played.

Rugby AEI 2nd XV 26pts Shipston 3rd XV 22pts

In an excellent game the Rams 3rd XV could not get back to winning ways but took part in a contest with Rugby AEI where the lead changed hands several times and with the result in doubt right to the last. Shipston restored to normal strength with the return of several stalwarts started brightly with enterprising rugby that resulted in a well worked try finished off by Nick Briggs darting in from the wing. The opposition rallied and scored a converted try from strong running by the opposition fly half, Shipston threw everything into attack and should have been awarded a try when Chris Ransome crossed the line, however following further surging runs from the pack Tim Brendan emerged from the bottom of a ruck and was credited with a forward try that regained the lead for Shipston.

The opposition scored a further converted try through another break by the fly half and again The Rams responded with a charge down try from Andy Cox following up on terrier like work from Brother Charlie Cox, who had a first class game at scrum half. The game ebbed and flowed in the second half with Shipston mostly on the defensive due to good kicking by Rugby who used the elements to keep Shipston penned in their own half. To Shipston’s enormous credit, realising kicking was not an option, the Rams embarked on a series of attacks through forwards and backs, and from alert play by James Horton in the centre a tremendous team try was scored by Chris Forman that regained the lead.

The tackle count increased as Tim Brendan and Paul Horton notched a series of scalps with bone crunching tackles in the middle of the park that stretched the home side’s resources as further replacements were wheeled on. With a narrow lead of 3 points Shipston were denied at the last by a try that followed a break out by Rugby that was converted and gave the ultimate prize to the home side. Man of the match was Josh Hawkins who had an excellent game in the pack with good loose play and brave tackling. Credit to the opposition who played the game with spirit leaving Shipston looking forward to the rematch in the New Year.

Harborne 3rd XV 24pts Shipston 3rd XV 7pts

Shipston travelled to Harborne with a weakened 3rd XV and only 14 to start the game. This was soon reduced to 13 when William Howard after a couple of searching runs was injured and retired from the field. Up to that point Shipston had made some telling inroads into the Harborne defence and should have scored on a couple of occasions after bursts through the centres. Sadly the scores came from mistakes that yet again were punished by an opposition well equipped to exploit the errors.

In the second half Shipston rallied and scored a try after a burst from guest full back Liam Flowers, yet another Father-Son combination with Gary at fly half, the try was finished off by the ageing but alert John Rhodes, who some say ran at least 1 metre to score under the posts. Shipston to their credit never gave up and particularly pleasing were some of the try saving tackles made by the likes of Chris Ransome and special note to Tricky Earl who ran the width of the pitch to superbly stop the opposition winger in full flight. Despite continuing to press the opposition, the final try came from Harborne who ran out deserved winners.

Saturday 28th October Mayo Road
Shipston 3rds 21pts Oxford Harlequins 62pts

Shipston 3rds were given a wake up call by a young and skilful Oxford Harlequins side on Saturday at Mayo Road. The game started with the visitors racing into a 21 point lead that few amongst the veteran element of the home side thought was insurmountable so despite being down at half time, an early score from Rees Gidley saw Shipston right back in the game and the deficit was reduced to 10 points, 21 -11 in Oxfords favour with 20 minutes to go. At this stage if Shipston could have exerted more control of the game a closer result could have been achieved - this wasn't to be the case as any mistake was seized upon by the opposition with alacrity and tremendous support play, so despite the valiant attempts of cover tackling, by notably Chris Forman, the visitors always had options out of the tackle and scored whenever an occasion arose.

Special note should be made of man of the match Sam Hunter playing alongside his Father, Daryl in the back row , his lineout jumping was exemplary as was the ground he covered during the game and increased the father son combinations in the side to two with useful contributions coming from the Horton pair also. Further tries were scored by Daryl Hunter and Andy Powell and penalties from James Horton. The 3rds should not be too disheartened by the performance which although a large deficit in the finish did not reflect the difference between the two teams.

Saturday 21st October, Mayo Road
Shipston 3rd XV 5pts Evesham 2nd XV 23pts

Shipston 3rds agreed to take on a side from Evesham that has an excellent record that stretches back over a number of seasons, however throughout the match Shipston refused to be overawed and competed in every phase of the game despite the proximity of the game to the Club Ball the previous night, which was thoroughly enjoyed by several of the team. The difference between the two sides was that Evesham took advantage of any mistakes that the home side made and released skilful backs to do the damage. The only blight on their performance was a petty-mindedness from several of their players to argue and complain at the referee who dealt with the situation by warning Evesham, and finally in separate incidents to send two offending Evesham players off for a cooling ten minutes in the sin bin.

Tricky rises to the challenge

Shipston were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage but despite being behind throughout the game they stuck to their task with great determination and were rewarded with a superb team try that was created in the back row and from several flowing phases of attack resulted in a well taken try by Chris Ransome who yet again displayed first class finishing technique on the wing. Will Howard was nominated man of the match for his defensive and positional performance. Shipston can take heart from their performance and will benchmark their season on how they performed against a talented Evesham team.

Shipston 3rd XV 75 pts Kings Norton 3rd XV 0pts

Shipston 3rd XV continued their winning ways with a comprehensive win over a depleted Kings Norton side who did well to fulfill the fixture. With stand-in referee John Cowper well in control Shipston 3rds played with a ruthless efficiency with forwards and backs combining well at all phases of the game. Particularly pleasing was the willingness to play rugby that utilised all the members of an ever growing and talented group of youngsters combining with the wily talents of veterans such as Mark Ashworth and Tim Brendan.

Will Howard Offloads

With Gary Flowers marshalling the backs in an efficient manner the side is fast proving to be a difficult one to beat. The youth provided the scores through James Horton with 4 tries and numerous points from his boot, Chris Ransome, Will Howard and Charlie Cox getting in on the action plus others, most notably the super fit veteran Chris Forman with 3 tries to his credit. Special mention should be made of the work rate and industry of Andy Cox (Man of the match) and the stalwart of the front row Tricky Earl - with the commitment on the pitch shown by players such as these the side can only get better.

7th October 2006 - Claverdon 2nds 3pts Shipston 3rd XV 40pts

Shipston 3rd XV travelled to Claverdon on Saturday still smarting from last week’s defeat and determined to avenge the poor performance by their high standards. In a youthful Claverdon they found ideal opponents.

The game started in a tight fashion and despite going behind to a Claverdon penalty the Shipston forwards started to assert themselves and Big Tim Brennan shouldered his way over for a try that meant Shipston had a narrow 7-3 half time lead. Mindful of the need to dominate the early stages of the restart Shipston started to play some excellent 15 man rugby with both the forwards and the backs combining to devastating effect.

Chris Ransome scorched over for a well taken try that was converted, and then the floodgates opened as Claverdon lost cohesion and discipline and tries were added by both Hortons, younger and older, a lung gasping run from the mobile back row unit headed up by Tim Brennan and a well deserved try from Man of the Match Gary Flowers who should be complimented on his distribution and decision making at fly half throughout the game. Conversions and a penalty goal were added by James Horton that rounded off an excellent afternoons work as the 40 points total was achieved.

Chipping Norton 3rd XV 19pts   Shipston 3rd XV 20pts

Despite playing the entire game with 14 players Shipston 3rds secured an excellent victory against a much-changed Chipping Norton side. Shipston however got off to a poor start when they conceded an early try after an uncharacteristic mistake in the back line. However this seemed to galvanise the entire team as with their avowed intent of playing direct positive rugby Shipston unleashead their skilful back line and after an excellent break and timed pass from centre James Horton Chris Ransome showed tremendous speed to round off a flowing move under the posts. With the sides level at half time the Shipston team resolved to dig deep and determined to secure a victory. The pack to a man tackled ferociously none more so than David Holt who played like a man possessed, and Shipston took the lead with a well taken penalty from James Horton, and a cheeky try from the alert Deano.

Chipping Norton rallied and scored twice to lead 19 – 15 with 10 minutes left however they had not reckoned on the typical determined spirit of the Shipston team as the pack tore into Chippy to enable David Holt to score a match winning and well taken try. All that was left was for some heroic defence to see out the game to secure a thoroughly commendable victory. Thanks is fully deserved to a committed and sporting Chipping Norton side and excellent refereeing from Rob Hawkins.

Chipping Norton 3XV 10 pts - Shipston on Stour 3XV 56pts

Shipston have started their 3rd XV campaign in style with a comprehensive victory in the sunshine at Chipping Norton. Opting to play a free flowing approach with full use of some excellent backs Shipston opened their account with a strong forward drive finished off by the redoubtable Andy Cox, who throughout the afternoon demonstrated the way forward with committed direct rugby. With some of the old guard relishing the addition of some young blood in the team the pattern of the game evolved with 3 tries from sidestepping number 8 Mike Manning, 2 from the younger Horton in the centre, and excellent efforts from Chris Ransome, Ian Moss who proved very difficult for the opposition to get hold of, and even Horton the elder shimmying through the middle. Perhaps the best cheer though should come for winger Ed Parker who scored his debut try for Shipston as he darted for the corner leaving disconsolate Chipping Norton players in his wake.

Towards the end after injuries to two of the Chippy players Chris Ransome sportingly joined the opposition and ended up scoring for them thereby completing the unusual distinction of scoring for both sides. The only blot on the game was an injury to Pete Buchanan who left the field with an ankle injury that may well require the veterinary skills of his father to put right! Shipston overall have started the season brightly with a total 15 man performance all are to be congratulated.
